Demographic Data

The key to fair and accurate test results at Master International

At Master International, we are committed to the development and maintenance of high-quality solutions, and we understand that candidates and companies may sometimes question why we collect demographic data, such as age and gender, during assessments. This article aims to address any concerns or uncertainties you may have about why we collect this information and how it benefits both test takers, test developers, and test users.

Why do we ask Test Taker to provide Demographic Data?

Demographic data is collected to ensure fairness and accuracy in our assessment tools. This information helps us develop high-quality representative benchmarks that reflect diverse groups, also called norm groups, ensuring our tests are valid and applicable to a diverse workforce.

What do we use Demographic Data for?

  • Data privacy: First, it is important to emphasise, that the data collected through demographic questions are never disclosed to the hiring company or test users. This data is solely collected as anonymized “big data” and only available and used by Master International.
  • Developing Representative Norms: Demographic data allows us to create norms that accurately reflect different populations. For example, we can develop local norms for various countries and an international norm based on extensive data, ensuring our tests are fair and unbiased across different cultures and regions. Norms help test users ensure that an individual's responses are always compared to a relevant representative group, reducing unconscious discrimination.
  • Reducing Bias: Psychometric tests can sometimes contain unintended biases. By analysing the collected demographic data, we continuously monitor our tests, and by studying the demographic data, we can identify and correct any biases swiftly and accurately, ensuring fair test results for all candidates and creating a more equitable experience.
  • Minimizing Adverse Impact: We use demographic data to track and minimize adverse impact, ensuring no group is disadvantaged. Understanding how different demographic groups respond to our tests allows us to adjust our tools and guide customers in avoiding discrimination, supporting fair decision-making.
  • Supporting multi-purpose assessments: Demographic data ensures our tests are suitable for various roles and purposes, whether for employees or managers. Whether for sale roles or for engineering roles. The demographic data ensures usability of our tools, and that the overall relevance is continuously monitored and improved.

Potential risks if we stopped collecting Demographic Data

Without demographic data, our ability to ensure fairness and accuracy in our assessments would be significantly compromised.

If we stop collecting this data, our test norms might be based predominantly on data from a specific demographic group. This could lead to norms that do not accurately reflect the broader population, resulting in unfair advantages or disadvantages for certain groups. For example, if a test result is normed using data primarily from younger individuals, it might not fairly assess older candidates whose experiences and perspectives differ. This could lead to older candidates being unfairly disadvantaged in the recruitment process. We ensure this does not happen by looking at the demographic data and how the actual distributions of test takers are. If there is a skewness in the data, we can then compensate by giving more weight to the underrepresented group. And this is only possible because we have insights to demographic data on a large group of people.

Another risk, if we did not have access to demographic data, is that our tests might also inadvertently favour specific groups, leading to unfair advantages or disadvantages. The validity of our tests relies on their ability to accurately measure the constructs they are designed to assess. Without demographic data, we would be unable to ensure that our tests are valid across different demographic groups. For example, if a test is designed to measure cognitive abilities but is only validated on a specific age group, it might not accurately measure these abilities in other age groups. This could lead to invalid test results and unfair hiring decisions. So, collecting demographic data ensures our assessments remain relevant, valid, and unbiased for everyone.
